Discover The 3 Reasons Why Kids Dental Cleanings Are So Important

Posted on: 13 December 2022

All too often, both parents and children underestimate the importance of routine dental cleanings for children. Oftentimes this is because people assign less importance to so-called baby teeth since these teeth are going to fall out eventually anyway. This is quite unfortunate because the truth is, there are several different reasons why kids' dental cleanings are so important. You can learn more about some of these reasons below.

#1: Establish Good Oral Health Habits At A Young Age

If your child is taught good oral health habits at a young age, they will be more likely to continue these habits into adulthood. One way you can help to establish these good habits is by taking your child to the dentist to have their teeth cleaned at least a few times each year throughout their childhood. This will allow them to not only get into the habit of visiting their dentist, but it will also allow them to develop a trusting relationship with their dentist so that they feel comfortable asking for help when experiencing any dental problems in the future.

#2: Prevent Damage To Permanent Teeth Developing Below The Gum Line

This is perhaps the most important reason to take your child in to have their teeth cleaned on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many parents do not realize that permanent teeth can be damaged before they ever break through the gums. If plaque is allowed to build up along the gum line, the bacteria present in this plaque can cause gum disease even in small children. This can ultimately result in damage to the teeth that are developing below the surface. The problem is, this plaque cannot always be removed solely by brushing and flossing at home. When you take your child in for a dental cleaning, this potentially dangerous plaque will be removed. This helps to protect both the teeth your child has now, and the teeth your child will have in the future.

#3: Prevent Tooth Pain By Detecting And Filling Cavities

Cavities can develop at any age. If your child develops cavities, they could end up dealing with significant tooth pain if these cavities are detected and filled while they are still small. Dental cleanings provide dentists with the perfect opportunity to examine your child's teeth so that any cavities that are present can be promptly addressed. This is especially important for children who have already begun getting their permanent teeth since allowing cavities to grow larger could result in the loss of these teeth that are meant to last the rest of the child's lifetime.
