Dental Office Services For A Chipped Tooth
Posted on: 5 August 2022
If you chip your tooth on a hard surface, you may have endured root or gum trauma and the elimination of some enamel. Seeking dental services will aid with salvaging your tooth. A bonding agent may need to be applied to your tooth. This agent will resurface and restrengthen the tooth.
The Healing Process
A chipped tooth that does not cause a lot of pain may not be considered an emergency. A tooth that is loose or that is missing a great deal of its enamel should be brought to the attention of a dentist right away. The healing process may need to be complete, before having a dentist perform a complete restoration of the tooth.
Despite this, it is a good idea to consult with a dentist right away, especially if you are experiencing extreme discomfort. The dentist you visit will perform an X-ray of the portion of your mouth that was injured. You may be advised to take pain medication while you wait for the gums to heal. If root damage is evident, you may need to eventually undergo a root canal.
The Surgical And Cosmetic Services
A tooth that has been traumatized may have weakened roots. This is not always the case, however. Some slight trauma may only necessitate time for healing to take place. Your dentist will outline whether or not a surgical procedure will need to be performed. A surgical procedure may be covered by your dental insurance. If the tooth has only undergone some cosmetic issues, you may need to pay out-of-pocket costs to have the tooth repaired.
One type of cosmetic procedure that will resurface the tooth is called a dental bond. A dental bond is a sticky substance that can be color-matched to the color of your natural tooth. A dental bond agent is typically used to repair teeth that are aligned along the front of the mouth. Since these teeth are thinner than molars, they are often not eligible to undergo a capping process.
A bonding agent will be brushed across the tooth that was damaged. A dentist will build up the thickness of the tooth. Once the dental bond is applied, the repaired tooth will match the appearance of the other teeth that surround it. A dental bond material will not permanently repair a tooth. As the bonding agent wears off, it will need to be reapplied.
