How to Care for You Cavity Filling
Posted on: 15 October 2020
There are worse things than having a cavity, but you most likely aren't thinking of those things while having your tooth cleaned and drilled out after finding out you have a cavity. If you have a cavity, your dentist will do what it takes to gently drill your tooth and fill in your cavity. After you leave the office though, it's up to you to take care of that cavity filling and your tooth/teeth to prevent you from having to come back in for a root canal. Read on for tips to help you take care of your newly filled cavity.
1. Brush Thoroughly
Be sure you are brushing the face of your teeth, as well as behind and the top/bottom of your teeth. Clean a cavity filling thoroughly when brushing, being sure not to press down too firmly on your teeth to prevent scratching your tooth enamel, or to prevent damage to the filling as well. Brush your teeth using fluoride toothpaste, ensuring that you brush twice per day for at least two minutes each time. Brushing your teeth prevents plaque from sitting on your teeth for too long and eating through the enamel on your teeth, which is what led to your cavity in the first place.
2. Floss Your Teeth Daily
Make sure you are flossing your teeth daily with dental floss. Be sure you get in between every tooth in your mouth. You should be flossing daily to get rid of the plaque in between your teeth where your toothbrush isn't able to reach. Flossing is very important, but your teeth that have had fillings in them are your most vulnerable teeth right now, so you need to be sure you are flossing these teeth that can end up having a similar issue.
3. Watch What You Eat
Of course, you should avoid sugary foods anyway, and avoid sugary drinks, all of which can damage your teeth, but when you have had a cavity filled, you need to not only avoid these things, you also should avoid chewing or eating anything that could damage your filling. Harder foods can end up cracking or breaking your filling, landing you back in the dentist's chair to have your cavity filled yet again.
