Signs You Have A Severely Infected Tooth

Posted on: 29 December 2018

Your tooth is actually a living part of your body, comprised of tissue and nerves. Your tooth can get infected just like other parts of your body due to exposure to bacteria or poor oral hygiene. When a tooth gets infected, often a cavity arises, but a severe infection can cause more serious damage. Since an infected tooth is a serious dental concern, if you feel your mouth is in danger of oral decay or other issues, call your dentist right away. Here are signs you have a severely infected tooth.

Facial pain

An abscessed tooth or other oral issue can cause your face to feel pain, not just the area where enamel and nerves are concerned. Your upper cheeks, jaw, and even your inner ears can feel pain, especially in the areas surrounding where the infection is.

When you get facial pain, one of the biggest concerns is a sinus infection, so see your dentist right away if you have mouth and face pain, especially if your mouth pain occurred first.

Foul taste in the mouth

An infected tooth can cause you to have a bad taste in your mouth or make your breath smell foul no matter how much mouthwash you use. The decay of your mouth and the infection itself cause the issues you have orally. See your dentist if you have mouth pain along with a bitter or decaying taste in your mouth.

Sore gums

Very inflamed or red gums can be a sign of gum disease, which in turn can be caused by a dead or dying tooth. Since gum disease affects your entire mouth, if you have an infected tooth, have the damaged enamel treated right away so you can preserve your gums.

Severe pain

A cavity may cause minor pain when the affected area is touched or gets exposed to heavy pressure. A badly infected tooth will hurt all the time, and will typically increase in intensity until the tooth either dies, is removed by your dentist, or treated. You may need to get antibiotics as part of your treatment so speak to your dentist as soon as your oral pain begins or starts to worsen so you can start antibiotics and get your tooth treated safely.

Your infected tooth will require professional dental care to treat. Make an emergency appointment with your dental practitioner if your pain is extreme or if more than one tooth is hurting at the same time.
