Discreet Orthodontic Options Based On The Degree Of Your Dental Misalignment

Posted on: 21 May 2018

Few people have perfectly straight teeth. Thus, if you suffer from a dental misalignment, you are not alone. Still, how your misalignment occurred and the severity of the malocclusion may be unique to you. As a result, an orthodontist will not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to your treatment.

The orthodontic professional may recommend different appliances based on the degree of your dental misalignment and the level of treatment discretion that you prefer. Here are a few discreet applications that can straighten the teeth, depending on the severity of the teeth's crookedness.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are made of a rigid, transparent plastic. Consequently, they offer a discreet method of alignment. They are most suitable for minor to moderate misalignments.

The aligners are worn over the teeth like a special mouth tray. They apply pressure to force the teeth's movement toward a straight configuration. Also, the plastic aligners are worn in sets. One aligner is placed over the teeth of the top palate. The other is worn over the teeth of the bottom palate.

Throughout the treatment process, you wear a set of aligners for several weeks. That set is then replaced by the next successive set for the next few weeks. This pattern of aligner replacement continues until your teeth are properly aligned.

Clear Braces

Clear braces have brackets that are made of a white or transparent ceramic material. They are worn over the teeth in the same manner as traditional braces and include the same components. Thus, they still include a metal archwire and elastic bands. To ensure that the metal and elastic components of clear braces are not easily noticeable, the archwire can be frosted with a white coating, and clear or white elastic bands can be selected.

In addition, clear braces can be used for minor to severe dental misalignments, just as their metal counterparts can be. Thus, a wide range of dental patients can be treated using the clear appliance.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are hidden from view because they are affixed to the side of the teeth that is next to the tongue. The braces are made of metal and are fashioned like traditional braces, with an archwire and elastic ligatures.

The lingual braces, like conventional braces, can be used even for severe malocclusions.

If you would like to have your dental misalignment discreetly corrected, contact an orthodontist at an office like Orthodontic  Smilemaker in your local area. The dental professional can assess the degree of your dental misalignment and prescribe the most suitable option for your needs.
