Two Natural Remedies For Toothaches

Posted on: 2 May 2016

Toothaches don't generally go away on their own. To relieve the pain permanently, you need to treat the problem that's causing the pain, which in a lot of cases requires a trip to the dentist. However, that doesn't mean that you have to suck it up and deal with the pain until you can get to the dentist. Instead, try one of these home remedies to get some temporary pain relief.

Clove Oil

Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic. Because it numbs whatever it comes in contact with, it's a good option for treating tooth pain. However, clove oil needs to be used carefully. If the clove oil comes into contact with more sensitive areas of your mouth, such as your gums or tongue, it can make your pain worse. It needs to be applied directly to your tooth. To do this:

  1. Drip one or two drops of clove oil onto a cotton ball. It should be damp, but not saturated.
  2. Place the cotton ball on your tooth so that the clove oil is only touching the sore tooth.
  3. Hold the cotton ball in place until the pain eases.

Alternatively, you can put the clove oil on your finger and massage it into the tooth. If you don't have clove oil on hand, you can place a whole clove or a small bit of powdered clove directly on the tooth. If you're using a whole clove, place it on the tooth and chew it lightly to release some of the oil. Once the clove is punctured, keep it against your tooth for up to 30 minutes.

Salt Water

Gargling salt water temporarily relieves tooth pain, so you can gargle salt water to relieve pain from a cavity. Salt water also cleanses the area and reduces inflammation. So it's a great option for people who are experiencing pain from an infection -- such as a dental abscess. To gargle salt water follow these steps:

  1. Put a teaspoon of salt into an eight-ounce glass of warm water.
  2. Stir the water to dissolve the salt. When the salt is dissolved it will look like cloudy water.
  3. Take a drink of the salt water, but don't swallow it. Instead, swish that salt water around in your mouth until the pain lessens.
  4. Spit the salt water out.
  5. Repeat if necessary.

When you have a toothache, relieving the pain is important. However, it's important to remember that relieving the pain using a home remedy is often only a temporary solution. To get rid of the pain permanently, you should go to a dentist, such as those at Suncoast Dental Center, to resolve the problem causing the pain.
